Local Waves

The CANNONBALL Initiative is a catalyst to move our mission of developing fully devoted followers of Jesus forward even further over two years. We want to aggressively build the ministries, gatherings, and groups that help us (1) reach children, students, and adults far from Jesus and the church with the life-giving message of the Gospel; (2) invite them into a relationship with Jesus that will change the trajectory of their lives; (3) see their lives transformed by Jesus as they are empowered to follow His path for their lives.

Over the next two years, we want to see people…

  • being baptized into Jesus!
  • finding hope in God!
  • stepping in to serving on a Team!
  • deepening their faith with Jesus!
  • sharing with others how Jesus has changed their lives!
  • are experiencing generational richness in friendships, ministry and missions!

Compassionate Waves

We have always been passionate about our local and global compassion ministries and now is no exception! More than ever, we must focus our attention on helping people to connect with God through the work of the Local Church. We will show compassion through our partnerships:

  • with Christhia Seva mission in India is to bring the Gospel to the people and show mercy and care for those who are gripped by poverty.
  • with Come-n-Serve Ministries in east Africa to bring holistic, sustainable, and long-term solutions to displaced populations.
  • with Impact Africa Ministries is to practice Community Health Evangelism through agricultural, medical and small business initiatives.
  • with Back-2-Back Ministries and Haiti Outreach Ministries to bring hope to the Haitian people.
  • with Burma Christian Evangelism Ministry to train leaders to reach the local populations with the Good News of Jesus.
  • expansion of our local outreach efforts through Ross and Morgan ministries, SON Ministries, Whiz Kids, Nate’s Toy Box, Christian Camp, individual benevolence and much more!

Engaging Waves

In March of 2009, 85 people took a huge leap of faith and jumped in. They helped to launch White Oak’s Ross Township Campus. We did this in order to take new ground for Jesus’ mission: Connecting people into a saving relationship with God. Over the past nine years, God has been doing just that. We have seen 192 people put their faith in Jesus and surrendered to Him in baptism. We currently have more than 200 people serving in ministry to enrich our Ross community. We have seen hundreds of adults and teens connecting in relationships through Life Groups. In nine years, we have gone from 85 people as a start-up to nearly 400 in weekend attendance! Lives are being transformed in the name of Jesus!

This CANNONBALL season stands as another chance to jump out in faith and make a huge splash! Once again, we will take new ground! We have the opportunity to go all in. With 18 acres on US 27 just north of Ross, we are primed with a piece of property that will serve as a community hub for recreation, relationship building, ministry, and life change! It will serve as a launching point for sending people out into our community to serve one another. This will set us up to serve our community in new ways and for ministry that will see lives changed forever.

One-Fund

One-fund is exciting because everyone is engaged and a part of what God is doing. We are one church with one God who is leading and transforming us. Through a “one-fund” initiative we will more successfully invite everyone to jump in and make waves with their generosity, regardless if you currently give, or what you currently give.

A traditional campaign focuses mostly on people who are already giving. These people are asked to continue giving what they currently are, as well as to start giving toward something else, like a building or special project. We are not doing that with CANNONBALL. Instead, CANNONBALL will be a “one-fund” initiative, meaning ALL of our giving goes toward our initiatives over the next two years to make waves. It’s all one mission, so it’s all one budget.

Through a “one-fund” initiative we will more successfully invite everyone jump in and make waves with their generosity, regardless if you currently give, or what you currently give. God has called White Oak Christian Church on one mission of transformation. Our general operating budget is part of this mission. The future facility in Ross will be a huge part of this mission as well. It’s easy to think that we’re giving to two separate things, transformation and the building, but it’s all one mission. Our mission is to see people become fully devoted followers of Jesus by taking their next step with Him.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: HOW LONG IS MY COMMITMENT?

A: We are asking that everyone make a two-year commitment to CANNONBALL. The fulfillment period for your commitment will begin in APRIL 2018 and will culminate in APRIL 2020.

Q: IF WE ARE COMMITTING TO CANNONBALL, HOW DOES THIS CHANGE MY GIVING TO MISSIONS, THE GENERAL FUND, AND OTHER SPECIAL OFFERINGS?

A: During this two-year period, every contribution to God through White Oak is a contribution to our CANNONBALL initiative. Every aspect of the ministry vision God is calling us towards for the next two years will be funded through CANNONBALL. There will not be separate funds. Every gift made will go into the same fund and will be our CANNONBALL giving. Therefore, every weekend becomes a day to celebrate and contribute towards what God is doing in us and through us to make life-transforming waves.

Q: WHAT ARE YOU ASKING ME TO DO?

A: First and foremost, we are asking that you pray and seek God’s leading on what He is asking of you. Prepare your heart to hear Him, and then listen to what He says. Join a Life Group during this season, if you aren’t already part of one. Engage in personal refection with God in the CANNONBALL Series Guide. Talk with your spouse, your family, or others about what this commitment will mean for this next exciting season of your life. We are asking that you make a generous, sacrificial commitment to Jesus and his Mission – whatever it is that God leads you to do. Follow Him. Finally, we ask that you prepare to be amazed. We serve an awesome God, and He is going to move in huge ways. We anticipate an unprecedented impact from our collective CANNONBALL commitments – something only God can do. Please mark your calendar for Commitment Sunday, March 18, 2018 and prepare to experience a life-changing worship service that will forever be remembered as a defining moment for our church and for our own faith.

Q: ARE THERE ADDITIONAL WAYS BESIDES FINANCES THAT I CAN GIVE MORE TOWARD CANNONBALL?

A: Be creative as you explore ways you and your family can give toward CANNONBALL. You might have some stock, property, or other items of that nature. Or you may have some stored resources that God has blessed you with in the past that He might be calling you to give during this time. Please let us know if you need assistance with facilitating gifts of property or stock, and we would be happy to help you with that. You can contact Brian at bdoerman@thewocc.com to make a gift of this type.

Q: WHAT IF I AM SEVERELY IN DEBT?  AM I SUPPOSED TO GIVE?

A: If you are currently seeking to pay off debt, we commend you for that. And you should continue to do so. We would be happy to help you on that journey and/ or recommend a budgeting group and/or resources that might help you. Being in debt, however, does not have to prevent someone from giving. Giving isn’t about what God wants from you; rather, it’s about what God wants for you. So it can be our joy and privilege to give at all times. Please contact Brian Doerman, at bdoerman@thewocc.com if you need assistance with a plan to get out of debt. We would be honored to help!

Q: WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A JOB RIGHT NOW?

A: What does that mean for my CANNONBALL commitment? CANNONBALL is about your total, radical, and sacrificial generosity for Jesus. We believe that God calls us to action in times of hardship just as much as He does in times of abundance, and that looks different for every person. But CANNONBALL is about a heart change- one that is accomplished by surrendering our lives completely. So that may mean that you are being challenged to sell things, to pick up odd jobs, or even to trust God in faith by making a commitment that you don’t quite know how to fulfill right now but that you believe God will provide for as you seek ways to sacrifice and work toward that commitment. We would like for everyone to be a part of CANNONBALL so that we can all be supporting, loving, encouraging, and praying for one another through this spiritually-transforming season at White Oak.

Q: WHAT ABOUT WHITE OAK INCURRING DEBT – WILL THAT BE ONE OF THE RESULTS OF CANNONBALL INITIATIVES?

A: White Oak leaders understand that many people feel strongly about the disadvantages of debt, while others see advantages, such as accelerating benefits of expanded ministry that can result in more believers in Jesus Christ as savior. Decisions regarding debt are premature at this time, due to unknowns such as how much funding will be generated through CANNONBALL, and more fine-tuned cost estimates of certain initiatives. We are committed to building and expanding God’s work at White Oak through various initiatives without incurring long-term debt. Assuming a healthy trend in giving by the congregation, we believe relatively short-term debt of up to $1 million, paid off within five years, is a reasonable approach to accelerate ministry benefits – and one that outweighs various disadvantages of short-term debt. We also believe that amount of debt for WOCC is not inconsistent with Scripture nor with what is taught through Financial Peace University.

Q: WHAT IF I HAVEN’T BEEN BAPTIZED YET?

A: Great question. People take different spiritual steps at different times. Some people begin praying before they begin attending church. Others begin going to a Life Group before they begin talking to God in prayer. Giving is another spiritual step, and it comes at different times for different people. One thing is for sure, however. Just like other spiritual disciplines, giving draws us closer to God. And God is calling ALL of us to give. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also– (Matthew 6:19). Whether you have taken the spiritual step of baptism or not, we would encourage you to still join us in this CANNONBALL initiative. We firmly believe it will draw you closer to God and hopefully to a place where you are ready to make the decision to become baptized and to surrender your life to the Lordship of Jesus.

Q: WHAT IF I AM NEW TO WHITE OAK?

A: CANNONBALL is about the vision of our church. We believe that the local church is one of the most compelling missions to give toward, and we would really love for you to make White Oak your home and join us in CANNONBALL as we make waves. If you are ready for it, this is a perfect time for you to put a stake in the ground and make this your church.

Q: WHAT IF I’VE NEVER GIVEN TO WHITE OAK  BEFORE?

A: CANNONBALL was designed specifically with you in mind. By doing a “one fund” initiative with CANNONBALL, we’re saying that every dime that is given to White Oak over the next two years goes towards CANNONBALL. So you don’t need to be a regular giver already in order to participate. CANNONBALL is a call to sacrificial, gospel-centered generosity for absolutely everyone at White Oak. If you have never given before, this is your chance to “jump in” and commit to the work God is doing, because that will truly “make waves”. We really hope you will.
